MATERIALS AND SAMPLES
In order to build my model in the most effective way, I dedicated 2-3 days of my time experimenting with different materials at the 3D workshop and looking at the advantages and disadvantages of each material, until I finally chose the one I thought would be best for my project.
In the first picture, the materials I started with were: metal & acrylic.
Materials for metal: metal ruler, protractor, speed clamps, nibblers, snips, knife, driller and screws.
Quick process
Easily bendable
Easy to find
(Experimenting with this material has also taught me how to drill holes in metal and how to close them)
Outcome does not look neat at all
Bumps
Material looks cheap/ not good quality
Good quality
Appealing to the eye
Easy to manipulate
(Using this material taught me how to use the heat press machine to melt acrylic)
Expensive
Not possible time wise (process too long)
METAL
ACRYLIC
Advantages
Disadvantages
Heat press machine (to melt acrylic)
Perspex Cement (to glue acrylic)
Second day: Wood
Working with wood was not easy at all, because it was my first time using it.
This final triangle took me a whole day to cut because of it's thickness, so seeing how long it took me means the material won't be effective as I will not have enough time to produce enough triangles and make my model.
However I learned a lot on how to manipulate wood.
Cutting 60 Degree angle
Inserting screws in wood
Material: White Plastic
I first wanted to experiment using this material thinking this was just white cardboard. Then when I started cutting it I realized this material was not cardboard because it was too thick.
However, I decided to proceed and to see the final outcome anyway.
The outcome was not bad at all, it looked neat and straight. Nonetheless, I had decided by then that I wanted to material to be brown like my second sample (images below).
Balsa Wood
At this point, I still had not found the right material for my project. And to follow my action plan, I had to start building the following week.
After having addressed my issue to my tutor, I was advised to try using Balsa Wood; because I wanted something similar to wood but that could be done easily.
Balsa Wood turned out to be:
- Light
- Easy to cut and glue together
- The color I wanted
- And finally good timewise
So I have decided that balsa wood will be the material I will use for this project.
Width: 3cm
Height: 9cm
My next step while cutting the wood, is to print on acrylic sheets in order to cover some parts of my model, to give it a purpose. Which will be using the model as an educational object, to raise awareness on the Nubians' history and current situation.
